A few weeks ago Charles and I were away for a long weekend, and that Sunday we visited the local church. Within moments I had Church Choir Girl envy. What made her so mesmerizing was how comfortable she was in her own skin.
You know that phrase, "Dance as though no one is watching"? Well, this lady dances as though no one is watching, when everybody is watching.
She moved her legs side-to-side to her own rhythm. She clapped and bopped up and down enthusiastically during upbeat songs. She pointed her finger upward or raised her hands toward The One in heaven. She swayed to her own beat, letting her body freely move the way the music was leading it to. When she got particularly joyous she even lightly stamped her foot in emphasis.
In case anyone is thinking that Church Choir Girl is relaxed with her body because she is super young and super skinny, let me gently correct you. This lady is middle-aged and her figure is the one most common in America (which is a size 14). And she is beautiful, because her spirit of self-acceptance shines through.
There are infinite reasons why many of us don't feel comfortable with our bodies. On this Motivation Monday, I'm not going to attempt to analyze our insecurities but rather inspire us to love the skin we're in. I hope the ten quotes below inspire you to love your body more, right now, just the way it is.
"I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well." - Psalms 139:14 (Amplified version)
"My limbs work, so I'm not going to complain about the way my body is shaped." -Drew Barrymore (actress)
"When we're awake in our bodies and senses, the world comes alive. Wisdom, creativity, and love are discovered as we relax and awaken through our bodies." - Tara Brach (psychologist)
"Healthy emotions come in all sizes. Healthy minds come in all sizes. And healthy bodies come in all sizes." -Cheri E. Erdman (author)
"To love yourself as you are is a miracle, and to see yourself is to have found yourself, for now. And now is all we have, and love is who we are." -Anne Lamont (author)
"Self-love is respecting my beautiful body. Yes, it is beautiful. It was divinely designed especially for me. A sacred creation for self-knowledge which brings me limitless opportunities to experience myself in each moment." -Michelle M. McGrath (self-love mentor)
"Real beauty isn't about symmetry or weight or makeup; it's about looking life right in the face and seeing all its magnificence reflected in your own." -Valerie Monroe (magazine editor)
"It's never been true, not anywhere at any time, that the value of a soul, of a human spirit, is dependent on a number on a scale. We are unrepeatable beings of light and space and water who need these physical vehicles to get around. When we start defining ourselves by that which can be measured or weighed, something deep within us rebels." -Geneen Roth (author)
"Step away from the Mean Girls...and say bye-bye to feeling bad about your looks. Are you ready to stop colluding with a culture that makes so many of us feel physically inadequate? Say goodbye to your inner critic, and take this pledge to be kinder to yourself and others." -Oprah
And from yours truly...please reread the quote in the picture above. :-)
